The 4th FAD-Conference “The Challenge – Exhaust Aftertreatment for Diesel Engines” was held in the midst of the 800 anniversary of Dresden. 210 conference participants of 16 countries came to discuss current topics and the state of the art of exhaust aftertreatment technologies for diesel engines with experts of the industry and research in the resplendent city of culture and science.

The global tightening of emission limits for diesel engines and the public discussion about the harmful potential of diesel engine emissions require the application of efficient exhaust aftertreatment technologies. Especially the particulate and nitrogen-oxide emissions have to be drastically reduced within the next years. By now exhaust aftertreatment systems for variable applications are offered in series but still technological solutions have to be found in order to meet the requirements. In this point research and development face a huge challenge.

For future diesel engines new concepts with an efficient exhaust aftertreatment technology that allows a simultaneous reduction of limited pollutants are expected nationally as well as internationally. These concepts require new materials, sensors, control and monitoring strategies as well as regeneration methods.
We thank all speakers for their interesting technical contributions as well as the 16 companies and institutions that enriched the conference with their exhibition.

These two days of the conference offered variable possibilities for exchanging experiences between development engineers of the vehicle and supplier industry, suppliers of measurement equipment, scientists, engineers of the retrofitting industry, representatives of the legislative, members of industrial unions and of the employer´s liability insurance association.
