Perspectives of Exhaust Measurement Technology
Bild_028.jpg

On 3 and 4 July 2008 76 user and producer of exhaust measurement technique met at the FAD-workshop “Perspective of the exhaust measurement technology” in Dresden.

Bild_061.jpg The attention of the first day was given to the exhibition of the workshop. Eight exhibitors presented their products by giving short presentations and Bild_066.jpgshowing the function of the devices at their stands. Thus the participants gained a comprehensive view of the state of the art as well as topics for a technical conversation. Besides this the Vehicle Research Institute in cooperation with the ADAC e.V. showed practically the application of the measurement technique.

At the second day the speaker explained the problems resulting from the further tightening of the limit values and introduced possible solutions. The different contributions displayed the technical challenges and illustrated the perspectives.

Prof. Dr. Zikoridse, FAD e.V./University of Applied Sciences, opened the day by giving a introduction into the topic. The next presentation was held by Mr. Arlitt, AVL Emission Test Systems GmbH, who spoke about the measurement of not yet limited gaseous exhaust components. This section was complemented by the contribution of Mr. Schröder, Horiba Europe GmbH, who explained the measurement of NOx and other nitrogen compounds caused by low emitting diesel engines.

After a short brake, which was used by the participants to visit the exhibition, Dr. Carli, Volkswagen AG, showed in his presentation which changes and improvements in the particle measurement technique are required by the introduction of EURO 5/6 for passenger cars and light duty vehicles. His presentation was followed by the contribution of Dr. Lambrecht, FhG IPM referring to the development and experiences with optical exhaust measurement. Dr. Arndt, AVL List GmbH, continued the series of presentations with “Perspectives of particle measurement technique – alternative measurement technique for the quantification of lowest particle emissions”. Finally Mr. Engeljehringer, AVL List GmbH, explained the challenges of sample drawing at modern powertrain concepts. At the end of the workshop the panel discussion gave all participants the chance to debate on the topic and to ask questions that were not answered in the presentations.

In summary it can be said, that the detection of the constantly smaller getting quantities of limited pollutants as well as the required statements on not yet limited pollutants (e. g. NO2, NH3, formaldehyde, nanoparticles) and the peculiarity of new combustion processes and fuels turn out to be a high challenge for the measurement technique and measurement processes.

We are very grateful to all speakers and exhibitors for their engagement and want to thank all participants as their technical competence and interest in sharing experiences as well as the readiness for discussion allowed the workshop to become a real success.
