Large diesel engines and emission legislation
20090701_151410a.gifOn July  1 and 2, 2009 the FAD organized in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building an Urban Affairs (BMVBS) a workshop on “Realization of the emission legislation for large diesel engines” in Dresden. 110 participants and 6 exhibitors accepted the invitation to attend the workshop.

Those two days offered various possibilities to get informed on latest development trends of the emission legislation and research results as well as measures for the emission reduction for large diesel engines.

20090701_172520a.gifThe contributions of the first day and the exhibition displayed how measurement technology producer respect the speciality of the engine category. Mr. Kock (Germanischer Lloyd AG) spoke about the possibilities of the mobile emission measurement and the realization of the emission legislation for the maritime navigation. Dr. Arndt (AVL List GmbH) introduced the present emission legislation requirements on the mobile emission technology as well the respective solutions. The presentations of the first day where completed by the contribution of Mr. L.-E. Schulte (TÜV Nord Mobilität GmbH), who spoke on “Emission measuring of combustion engines during realistic operating conditions – PEMS – Portable Emission Measurement Systems”

20090701_172656a.gifThe parallel exhibition of the workshop offered an overview on the state of the art and was well received by the participants. The exhibitors were AVL List GmbH, E.A.S.T. SOLUTION, Horiba Europe GmbH, Matter Engineering GmbH, TÜV Nord Mobilität GmbH as well as the Vehicle Research Institute.

The second day was marked by technical contributions and the final panel discussion. Mr. Kaune (BMVBS) explained in his introductory presentation the challenges and chances of the future emission legislation for the maritime navigation and the railroad. His statements were completed by Mr. Heseding (VDMA), who spoke on “Large diesel engines -  success strategies for a cleaner environment”. Subsequently Mr. Götze (Germanischer Lloyd AG) addressed the “Emission legislation for inland and ocean navigation”. Later Mr. Gamer (LfLuG) spoke on “Facts and solution strategies for the reduction of Formaldehyde emissions of Biogas block heat and power plants”. As representative for the large engine industry Dr. Bergmann (MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH) gave in his contribution an overview on the challenges and solution strategies resulting from the future emission legislation. Finally Mr. W. Kliche (BMVBS), Mr. T. Mundt (Germanischer Lloyd AG) and Mr. L.-E. Schulte (TÜV Nord Mobilität GmbH) in their joint presentation “Exhaust aftertreatment - a challenge for inland navigation vessels or inverse? – The R&D project of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs” about the R&D project of the BMVBS and introduced first research results. At the end Prof. Zikoridse spoke about the strategies and concepts for the realization of the future emission legislation for nonroad-applications.

Podiumsdiskussiona.gifAll issues of this topic could not only be discussed with the speakers after their contribution but also during the final panel discussion.

Conclusion: The topic “large diesel engines and emissions” gains more and more interest of the global and European environmental policy. The realization of the future emission legislation means an enormous technological challenge for the involved industry and research institutes. But also the legislator is challenged with the creation of the corresponding regulations.

We thank all speakers and exhibitors for their commitment who greatly contributed to the success of this workshop. Moreover we are grateful to all participants. Their professional competence and interest in exchanging experiences as well as their lively and open discussion made the workshop a success.
